First-round picks sign a four rookie-scale contract in the NBA, but only the first two seasons are locked in. The third and fourth are team options. The options for the 2021 and 2022 draft classes need to be decided by October 31.

For most teams, the options are simple clerical decisions. The Toronto Raptors and Oklahoma City Thunder wouldn’t give up on top prospects like Scottie Barnes and Josh Giddey. Even for role players, the decision is easy.

But some teams do pivot away from their recent first-round picks. Last year, the Utah Jazz didn’t pick up Udoka Azubuike’s fourth-year option (Listing the Rookie-Scale Options for the 2020/2021 Draft Classes). The Orlando Magic, who had acquired RJ Hampton previously from the Denver Nuggets, didn’t pick up his option, later waiving him so he could sign with the Detroit Pistons.
