As of the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement, the NBA added two additional roster spots beyond the maximum 15 for players on two-way contracts.
The goal was to give teams the means to develop players with fewer than four years of experience—part-time in the G League, part in the NBA. Two-way contracts can pay up to $508,891 for the entire 2022-23 season, pro-rated based on the in-season signing date.
Players can sign up to two years on a two-way contract, with no more than $50,000 guaranteed per season.
The experiment has been a success, with teams tapping into a deeper talent pool while bolstering teams’ investments in the G League.
