First-round picks sign a four rookie-scale contract in the NBA, but only the first two seasons are locked in. The third and fourth are team options. The options for the 2020 and 2021 draft classes need to be decided by October 31.

For most teams, the options are simple clerical decisions. The Minnesota Timberwolves or Charlotte Hornets wouldn’t give up on top prospects like Anthony Edwards and LaMelo Ball. Even for role players, the decision is easy.

But some teams do pivot away from their recent first-round picks. Last year, the Phoenix Suns didn’t pick up Jalen Smith’s third-year option, later trading him to the Indiana Pacers. Smith re-signed with Indiana this summer but was limited to the amount of the declined option ($4,670,160 in his case).
